A group of over 2,000 Knowles fans petitioned for the video to be reshot, complaining about the omission of the theme, poor editing, inappropriate outfits and, above all, the sexual themes that permeate the video and explicit scenes between Knowles and Jay-Z. Due to its sexual expression and suggestiveness, it provoked objections in some circles. At the end of July, the music video also topped the list of the most aired music videos in the UK. It premiered on July 12 on MTV's Total Request Live, where after some time it reached the top of the list. It was recognized as the Best Song of 2006 at the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards.Ĭommercially, "Déjà Vu" peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Déjà Vu" and its Freemasons club remix version received three nominations at the 2007 Grammy Awards. Critics commended the assertiveness and the sensuality with which Beyoncé sings the lyrics and compared her vocal delivery to that of Tina Turner in the late 1980s. Many critics noted the similarities of "Déjà Vu" with Beyoncé's own 2003 song "Crazy in Love". The song received generally mixed critical reviews. "Déjà Vu" was released as the album's lead single to US radio stations on June 24, 2006. The song's title and lyrics refer to a woman being constantly reminded of a past lover. Its music is largely based on live instrumentation, including bass guitar, hi-hat and horns, except the Roland TR-808 drum machine, which is a non-live instrument. "Déjà Vu" is an R&B song, which incorporates elements of 1970s funk and soul music. It was produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Beyoncé for her second solo album, B'Day (2006). But he definitely detracted from this song.Beyoncé Knowles, Rodney Jerkins, Delisha Thomas, Makeba Riddick, Keli Nicole Price, Shawn Carterĭéjà Vu is a song by American singer Beyoncé, featuring vocals by rapper Jay-Z. In "Crazy In Love," his meaningless rap was catchy and thus bearable. On a final note, I REALLY wish Jay-Z wasn't here. It's definitely catchy, though I'm still waiting for Beyoncé to show her true vocal talents (which she hasn't done since the Destiny's Child song "Soldier.") I'm sure this will be hugely popular, and I have no complaints about that. I actually prefer this chorus to the nearly identical "Crazy in Love" one, since I always had the feeling the music was racing towards some great climax it never reached. I also have to frown upon the repetition of the "Crazy in Love" formula, though I did enjoy this. While I prefer this, Christina definitely has the superior voice. The real sense of "déjà vu" is in regards to Beyoncé's earlier hit "Crazy In Love." The similarities are obvious, though I also notice similarity to Christina Aguilera's new song "Ain't No Other Man." I read an alternate version of the lyrics more suited to the name of the song, but the lyrics themselves are decent. The meaning is pretty obvious, so this is really a review. I don't make the list, don't be mad at me Like four-fours, like I'm from the H-O-U-S-T-O-N That's a no-go, my dough keep the scales tipping One you take in vein while the other you sniffin' 'Cause you gon' need help tryin' to study my bounce Now I run the bass, hi hat, and the snare
